Porphyrios Dikaios
1904–1971 · Cyprus
Curator of the Cyprus Museum from 1931 and later Director of Antiquities, who signed export permits for Cypriot antiquities and excavated Khirokitia, Sotira, Vounous and Enkomi.
Biography
From May 1932 Porphyrios Dikaios held the power to sign export permits for Cypriot antiquities, while the Cyprus Museum he curated sold its "duplicates" from a courtyard. He was born in Nicosia on 16 August 190420 and studied at Athens, Liverpool, Lyon and the Sorbonne3. Nominated by the Cyprus Government, he went to Athens in October 1923 to train as an assistant for the Museum and spent the session studying the Cypriote objects in its museums22. He joined the Cyprus Museum as Assistant Curator in 1929, became Curator in 1931 in succession to Menelaos Markides, and held the post until 19601,8.
His first excavation began as a rescue. Early in 1931 the Kyrenia police sent the Museum Red Polished vases collected at Vounous; Dikaios found looting under way and, with the Museum Committee's authority and small funds, cleared the first twenty tombs, paid for by donations that he and Gunnis collected. Another eleven followed in June, and a third season in May 1932, financed by a donation from J. C. Gaffiero, brought the total to 48 tombs. He states that the work saved a good part of the necropolis from looting26.
The Museum and its duplicates
Dikaios inherited the Museum's sale of "duplicates". In August 1931 he wrote to the Colonial Secretary that "our stock of duplicates cannot last always"5. A notice in the Cyprus Gazette of 27 May 1932 gave him the power to sign export permits, which had earlier been devolved to Markides, and in that month the Museum Committee required carbon copies of permits recording the prices paid5. Visiting critics, among them John Linton Myres, disliked the saleroom, and the sales went on until 19915.
He and Rupert Gunnis, then Inspector of Antiquities, shared a concern about illicit digging. In 1935 Dikaios inspected a site at Miliou that Gunnis had offered privately to Oxford and the British Museum, and judged it too eroded; with John Hilton he visited the Aghirda cave, and finds from it were registered on 18 and 26 November 19355. A letter of 20 April 1936 is addressed to him as Acting Director of Antiquities5. His 1935 re-exhibition of the galleries and a new cataloguing system answered the report of the Museums Association inspectors of 19323,8.
Buying, refusing, licensing
Under Dikaios the Museum bought from licensed and private sellers. Merrillees traces sales from the Palma family to the Museum between 1935 and 1945, among them White Painted vases in 1935 and a seal, earrings and a Harpocrates pendant in 1938; he also shows that Dikaios transposed the sources of two bronze sceptres, one recorded as bought from Rostas of Gypsos and the other from Andronikos of Erimi7. When labourers digging the foundations of a new wing of the Municipal Hospital at Larnaca found a hoard of silver staters in July 1933, 277 coins were saved at once and the Museum later took the lots gathered from dealers through George Petrakides, all but nine poor pieces. By Dikaios's count 99 staters reached the London market and two a Cypriot in South Africa25. The American Numismatic Society's author, who was offered upwards of a hundred of them, reports Dikaios saying that not all could be secured locally and that many were sent out secretly33. In the same years Wing-Commander O'Brien Hubbard gave the Museum an Iron Age amphora that, in Dikaios's words, he had saved from illicit diggers and dealers32. In 1952 a group of Late Cypriot gold jewellery bought for the Museum was traced to Kokkinokremmos near Pyla, where Dikaios made a trial excavation10. In 1955-56 the Museum took a gold ring with a running ibex from P. Maclean in exchange for duplicate pottery13.
Foreign collectors met him as the gatekeeper. After the war Eve Dray bought pots for the Nicholson Museum in Sydney, and Dikaios refused an export permit for one, in the words Powell reports "doing his duty not letting anything he hadn't duplicates of out of Cyprus"6. Arthur Megaw then wrote that the scale of the Stewarts' purchases was "embarrassing", given the control of licensed dealers6. Around 1955 Dikaios granted Jim Stewart export licences, including one for three gold bands from Enkomi that Stewart could show had been found in 19366. Stewart privately judged him "consistently difficult and sometimes deliberately hostile" since the war, though he congratulated him on his appointment as Director6. In 1960 or 1961 Dikaios released the Karmi Kamares Cup find to the press at Stewart's request6. Claude Schaeffer told the Stewarts in Paris that he took half of the Vounous material Dikaios had excavated; Powell reports this as Schaeffer's account6.
Excavations
Vounous was published in Archaeologia in 194026; in 1933 Schaeffer and Dikaios directed the work there26. In 1932 René Dussaud had told the Académie of the Vounous finds and disputed Dikaios's reading of a terracotta group as a dance for a snake god47. Dikaios found the Neolithic settlement at Erimi in 193349, and he excavated at Khirokitia from 1936 to 1946, with the final report published in 195315. He dug Sotira-Teppes from 1947 to 1956 for the University Museum, Philadelphia, which published it in 19614,17. From 1948 to 1958 he directed the Department's side of the joint excavation at Enkomi with Schaeffer; his Enkomi: Excavations 1948-1958 appeared in 1969-714,18. At Enkomi he was placed in charge of the Department's scientific side in 1949, and described the 55 cm bronze horned god found there67; Bacon reports that he read the god as Nergal where Schaeffer saw Apollo24. In 1957 he excavated Royal Tomb 1 at Salamis14. He also wrote A Guide to the Cyprus Museum in 194716.
Director and professor
Kyriakos Nicolaou dates his appointment as Director of Antiquities to 1960, and the Oxford Encyclopedia of Archaeology in the Near East to 19611,3. He retired in July 1963 after 34 years, with Vassos Karageorghis promoted Director and Nicolaou Curator1. Dikaios then taught at Princeton and Brandeis until 1966 and afterwards at Heidelberg3. Nicolaou described him as "a keen investigator ... particularly of the island's prehistory, and an able administrator"2. He died at Heidelberg in August 1971, as the last volume of the Enkomi publication was appearing2.
Life and work
October 1923 – 1924
Of Larnaka, nominated by the Cyprus Government for training as an Assistant in the Cyprus Museum; spent the session in Athens from October 1923 studying the Cypriote objects in the Athens museums, and paid a brief visit to the British School's dig at Sparta.
As Keeper, wrote for the Museum Committee to the Colonial Secretary appealing against a cut in the Government grant and warning that the stock of 'duplicates' for sale was not inexhaustible.
Early in 1931 the District Police at Kyrenia sent the Cyprus Museum a number of Red Polished vases collected at Vounous; Dikaios visited, found extensive looting under way and, with the Museum Committee's authority and small funds, began excavating on its behalf. Donations collected by R. Gunnis (then A.D.C. to the Governor and a member of the Museum Committee) and Dikaios paid for about three weeks' work clearing tombs 1-20
After news that villagers had resumed looting, spent about a fortnight at Vounous clearing 11 more tombs (31 in all); preliminary reports in the Illustrated London News of 31 Oct 1931 (pp. 678 ff.) and 5 Dec 1931 (pp. 891 ff.)
Described as 'conservateur adjoint' of the Cyprus Museum in a Paris daily that drew a note on Cypriot art from his article in Mouseion; the article is 'Le musee de Chypre. Sa creation. Ses collections', Mouseion nos. 13-14 (1931), pp. 110-117, a history of the Museum's collections from 1874 and a survey of its series
Third season at Vounous, financed by a donation from J. C. Gaffiero of Nicosia: 17 more tombs, 48 in all. Dikaios states the excavations saved a good part of the necropolis from looting (looting concentrated in the western part, where the rock was good)
René Dussaud told the Académie des Inscriptions that the young Curator had reorganised the Cyprus Museum and was excavating at Vounoi near Kyrenia, finding red-lustrous pottery of c. 2000 BC with religious scenes. In Syria 1932 (pp. 223-226) Dussaud reproduced a terracotta group from Vounous and held Dikaios's reading of it as a ritual dance for a snake god mistaken, proposing worship of chthonic divinities; Dikaios himself published 'Les cultes préhistoriques dans l'île de Chypre', Syria 1932, pp. 345-354
The Governor, on the advice of the Museum Committee, appointed Rupert Gunnis Inspector of Antiquities, Porphyrios Dikaios Curator of the Cyprus Museum from 1 January 1932 in succession to M. Markides, retired, Menelaos Markides an Honorary Member of the Museum Committee, and J. Du Plat Taylor Honorary Assistant Curator of the Cyprus Museum.
The National Museums of France obtained permission to excavate at Vounous in collaboration with the Cyprus Museum; Schaeffer and Dikaios directed the operations. In 1937 J. R. Stewart, for the British School at Athens, dug the eastern part, which Dikaios says had seen little looting
'Ploughing in Cyprus in the early Bronze Age', Man 1933, pp. 132-133: a terracotta ploughing scene from the Vounous-Bellapais necropolis (a later survey spells the site Vouni)
Found a Neolithic settlement at Erimi (Limassol), reported by himself as Curator and Director of the Excavations in the Illustrated London News of 23 Dec 1933; in the same issue he sent a photograph of a limestone head of Apollo of the 4th century BC found 'recently' on a ruined temple site near Potamia, not far from Idalion, excavated by the Museum
Two pots from Kaloriziki tomb 5 (Kourion) were excavated by Dikaios and cited by him in the Illustrated London News of 23 Dec 1933; the excavator of the Swedish/Kourion material allowed them to be included in an article in AJA 41 (1937)
Reported for 1932 fieldwork that the Museum's work, under his direction, had found an extensive Neolithic settlement (Erimi), and that a second programme was under the joint direction of Schaeffer for the National Museums of France and himself for the Cyprus Museum
Larnaca hoard of silver Cypriot staters found by labourers digging the foundations of a new wing of the Municipal Hospital, six feet down. 277 coins were saved at the time (153 collected by Dr G. M. Pietroni and given to Dikaios; 70 sent by the Commissioner, B. J. Surridge; the rest sifted from the surface). George Petrakides of Larnaca later gathered two lots from dealers (14 and 172 coins), originally sold to dealers by labourers who had shared part of the hoard on the day of discovery
Treasurer, Cyprus Antiquities Fund (27 April 1934). The Governor published the statement of accounts of the Cyprus Antiquities Fund for the year ended 31st December, 1933, showing government grant, sale of duplicates, excavation donations and payments for excavations and purchase of antiquities.
'Excavations in Cyprus', Antiquity 8 (1934), pp. 86-90, signed as Curator of the Cyprus Museum and Director of the Excavations; says the Museum worked at the Vounous necropolis in 1931 and 1932 with very important results and the Erimi Neolithic settlement
A trial trench he sank at Enkomi struck an important ashlar-walled building with a private sanctuary, in which the bronze horned god was found; Bacon reports that Dikaios inclined to see the god as Nergal where Schaeffer saw Apollo Alasiotes/Reshef.
Treasurer, Cyprus Antiquities Fund (1935). The Government published the Cyprus Antiquities Fund statement of accounts for the year ended 31st December, 1934, showing receipts and payments including sale of duplicates, excavations and purchase of antiquities.
Listed by Davis among those who dug for the Penn Kourion programme 1934-54 (Sotira Teppes, Kaloriziki); later Director of Antiquities after independence, permitting Dumbarton Oaks fresco work.
Cyprus Museum purchased bronze sceptres CM 1935/III-7/1 and CM 1935/V-22/3; Dikaios's published note transposes their sources (Palma/Gypsos vs Erimi), per Merrillees.
Museum bought items from the Palma collection (White Painted vases, 1935; seal, earrings, pendant, 1938), which Dikaios published in the Museum's acquisition reports.
With Hilton visited the Aghirda cave after Gunnis had removed stone tools; finds registered 18 and 26 Nov 1935. Earlier in 1935 inspected the Miliou site Gunnis had privately offered to Oxford and the British Museum, judging it too eroded.
Published the Larnaca hoard (Numismatic Chronicle 15, 1935, pp. 165-190), revised with help from E. S. G. Robinson (British Museum). By his count the Cyprus Museum acquired all the dealer lots through Petrakides except 9 poor pieces; 99 staters from the hoard went to the London market soon after and 2 to a Cypriot resident in South Africa (all examined in the British Museum); a separate note, 'A Silver Stater of Idalium' (p. 282), proposed a reading of the king's name that G. F. Hill (NC 1936, p. 88) rejected as contrary to the Cypriot syllabary
'Recent acquisitions of the Cyprus Museum', Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus, 1935, pp. 23-33, 6 plates; his 'La réorganisation du musée de Chypre', Mouseion 33-34 (1936), pp. 81-100, on how the Museum's crowded display was re-presented
Over a year before the American Numismatic Society's 1938 publication, two Cypriots offered the Society upwards of a hundred staters from the Larnaca hoard; no purchase was made, the lot containing no unusual varieties and the owners asking high prices. The Society's author notes that Dikaios had said not all the pieces could be secured by the local authorities and many were secretly sent out of the island
With J. du P. Taylor, 'Acquisitions of the Cyprus Museum', RDAC 1936 (issued 1939), pp. 108-113: a bas-relief of a warrior of the early 5th century BC (an Athenian influence), a bronze figurine found in Nicosia, Bronze and Iron Age vases; he also wrote 'The Cyprus Museums in 1936' (p. 114)
'La civilisation néolithique dans l'île de Chypre', Syria 17 (1936), pp. 356-364; and 'Recherches sur la civilisation néolithique en Chypre', Comptes rendus de l'Académie des Inscriptions 1936, pp. 218-221. A French reviewer notes that Dikaios added Khirokitia to the Neolithic sites of Petra and Vounistri in the Syria article, and still thought Kythrea later than Erimi
The 'Hubbard amphora' (Iron Age painted amphora, c. 900 BC, probably from Vartivounas near Platani) was presented to the Cyprus Museum by Wing-Commander O'Brien Hubbard of Kyrenia, who in Dikaios's words saved it from the hands of illicit diggers and dealers. Published in the BSA 37 volume (session 1936-37, pp. 56-72) in honour of J. L. Myres, issued 1940; a notice in Nature calls it the product of illicit excavation saved for archaeological science, its scene of drinking through a siphon pointing to Syria
Acting Director of Antiguifies (17 April 1936). A quarantine restrictions notice concerning infected local areas is signed by the Acting Director of Antiquities, an incidental appearance of an antiquities official.
Acting Director of Antiquities (22 May 1936). Notice that the Monastery and Church of St. John Lampadistes at Kalopanayiotis is proposed to be declared an Ancient Monument and added to the Second Schedule of the Antiquities Law, with one month for objections.
P. Dikaios, Curator of the Museum in the Antiquities Department, is granted vacation leave, passage leave and daily leave for the period printed in the notice. (7 August 1936)
Described by Storrs's memoir as one of the Museum's two conservators ('Markides and Dikaeos'), whom foreign professors tried to browbeat; Storrs says Gunnis dealt with such professors, followed up forlorn hopes of finds in his car, and organised volunteer ladies for the sale of duplicates in the Museum

Described in a Syria review by C. F. A. Schaeffer as the active Curator who profoundly reorganised the Nicosia Museum: he sharply cut the number of objects exhibited and moved archaeological material to well-lit study rooms directly accessible from the public rooms; Schaeffer also notes comparisons between Sialk pottery and Dikaios's Chalcolithic sites
Reconstruction in 1940 of the bronze statue of Septimius Severus found in 1928 at Kythrea in fragments; evacuated for safety in the war, returned to the Museum by Dec 1945 (ILN 8 Dec 1945, p. 641).
