The project
In 1934 Porphyrios Dikaios carried out an emergency excavation of a sanctuary bothros, or favissa, at the locality of Mines at Kazaphani1. Beer gives the dates as 6 to 9 March 1934; Cassimatis describes the excavation as lasting three days2,3.
Fourrier states that the recovered material belongs to the Archaic and Classical periods1. She describes the terracotta figurines as a mixture of imports and local production derived from foreign models, with stylistic links to Soloi, Lapithos, Idalion and Salamis, and suggests that they point to a culturally open area whose political territory was not clearly defined1. Beer catalogues two limestone temple-boy votives from the favissa, Kazaphani nos. 48 and 63, both under Cyprus Museum inventory number 1934/III-16/1. She dates no. 48 to the last quarter of the fifth century BC and no. 63 to 450 to 425 BC2.
Cassimatis observes that the deposit can no longer be securely related to its original context, and that some notes by Dikaios remain3. Counts notes that Karageorghis later published the collections4.
