Saul S. Weinberg
fl. 1950–1983 · United States
American professor who studied the architecture of Bamboula at Kourion in 1951 and directed the University of Missouri's single 1955 season at Episkopi-Phaneromeni.
Biography
Saul S. Weinberg directed the single season at Phaneromeni, near Episkopi, in 1955: the University of Missouri's excavation of an Early Bronze Age settlement and cemetery in the Kourion area. J. L. Davis describes it as the first excavation in the Old World sponsored by an American state university7.
His first work in Cyprus was at Bamboula, Kourion. In 1951, with a grant from the American Philosophical Society, he made an intensive study of the architecture of the site that John Franklin Daniel had left unpublished at his death in 1948. Ellen Kohler assisted him; the rest of the Bamboula publication went to J. L. Benson8. Davis lists him among the workers of the University Museum's Kourion expedition between 1947 and 19547.
A. H. S. Megaw's report for 1954 announced that Weinberg would make trials at Phaneromeni the next year for the University of Missouri5. The 1955 report gives the results: house floors of Early Cypriot II and III, and a cemetery of a dozen chamber tombs with Early Cypriot II pottery, one of them with a dromos corridor over 9 m long and four openings on each side. Weinberg hoped to open larger areas in 19576. He published an account, "Exploring the Early Bronze Age in Cyprus", in Archaeology in 19561, and edited the volume of studies presented to Hetty Goldman that year2. A speaker at a Nicosia colloquium in 1975 called him the pioneer who had started the excavation of a settlement near Kourion about twenty years earlier, and hoped he would return to it9.

- 1955Directed a single season at Phaneromeni near Episkopi for the University of Missouri, the first excavation sponsored by an American state university in the Old World (Davis, citing Megaw 1956). Trial trenches found house floors of Early Cypriot II and III (the latter with abundant pottery in place under a destruction layer), and the adjoining cemetery of a dozen chamber tombs with EC II pottery, including a dromos-corridor over 9 m long with a chamber at one end and four stomia on each side; he hoped to open larger areas in 1957.
