The project
In 1934 Porphyrios Dikaios dug trial trenches at Mezarlik, in plot 410, and at Kel Ali, in plot 4621. At Mezarlik the trench reached bedrock and exposed an occupation deposit 1.60 m deep with three phases of stone hut foundations1. The finds were pottery fragments and two complete pots, with red wares more common than red-on-white ware, together with flint implements, stone axes and steatite ornaments, which Şevketoğlu glosses as picrolite1. At Kel Ali Dikaios found a roughly circular hut1. In her 1998 thesis, which recounts the work, Şevketoğlu gives the sites' earlier tentative datings as Chalcolithic for Mezarlik and Early Bronze Age for Kel Ali1.
