British Bronze Age archaeologist (1916-1998) who studied Mycenaean and Cypriot pottery found in the Levant and the Aegean, and who gave a Cypriot sherd to University College London.
Biography
Vronwy Hankey, born Vronwy Mary Fisher in 1916, grew up in Stilton and read classics at Girton College, Cambridge. She joined the British School at Athens in 1938 and took part in excavations at Knossos and Mycenae1. Her husband, Henry Hankey, became a diplomat, and she worked as an archaeologist alongside his postings1.
Her work on Cyprus belongs to her study of Late Bronze Age pottery. In 1975 she reviewed Porphyrios Dikaios's Enkomi and J. L. Benson's Bamboula at Kourion3. With Peter Warren she wrote Aegean Bronze Age Chronology (1989)4. She gave a sherd of an "SOS" amphora to University College London, where she was an honorary fellow attached to the Petrie Museum1,7. She died in 1998, and the British School at Athens has a memorial fund in her name1.
