J. Nicolas Coldstream

1927–2008 · United Kingdom

Aegean archaeologist and UCL professor whose datings of Greek Geometric and Archaic imports and Cypro-Geometric pottery underpin reports from Kition, Amathus and Salamis.

Biography

J. Nicolas Coldstream's dating of Greek pottery recurs in the excavation reports of Kition, Amathus and Salamis. He lived from 1927 to 200811. Kiely records that he lectured at Bedford College from 1960, held a personal chair in Aegean Archaeology there from 1975, became Yates Professor of Classical Art and Archaeology at University College London in 1983, a chair once held by Charles Newton, and retired in 1992. He taught Cypriot archaeology, including an MA, alongside Greek archaeology11.

He wrote an appendix on Geometric pottery for the report by Porphyrios Dikaios on the Salamis tombs in 196314. In "The Cesnola Painter: a change of address" (1971) he moved the workshop of the painter of the Kourion krater, found by Luigi Palma di Cesnola, to Euboea2,13. "Geometric Skyphoi in Cyprus" followed in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus for 19794. In Excavations at Kition IV (1981) he contributed the section on Greek Geometric and plain Archaic imports5, and in 1987 the non-Cypriot pottery of the Amathus necropolis volume, where he identified an East Greek bird bowl18,19. He reviewed three books by Vassos Karageorghis in the Journal of Hellenic Studies in 19779.

A workshop in his memory was held at the University of Cyprus on 13 December 2010, and its papers were edited by Maria Iacovou as Cyprus and the Aegean in the Early Iron Age: The Legacy of Nicolas Coldstream (2012)12.
