The project
At Ellines, north-east of Potamia village, Porphyrios Dikaios excavated a sanctuary and votive deposit in 19331,2. Counts characterizes the work as an emergency excavation that produced considerable stone sculpture2.
Fourrier reports that the assemblage consisted principally of limestone sculptures, most of them reused in later Hellenistic or Roman walls. She dates the sculptures mostly to the second half of the fifth century BCE, notes that several heads may be later and some are certainly Roman, and places the sanctuary's floruit around 500 BCE. Terracotta figurines were also recovered, including examples in Idalion style1,3.
Fourrier considers the sanctuary Dikaios excavated probably distinct from the one Ohnefalsch-Richter recorded near Potamia, and associates both with a male deity represented in forms such as Herakles-Melqart or Pan1. Hermary calls the deity very probably Apollo4. Karageorghis published "Material from a sanctuary at Potamia" in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus for 19795.
