The project
In 1954 Porphyrios Dikaios discovered a walled settlement on the Palaiokastro headland at Maa-Palaeokastro and opened a trial trench in it1. A. H. S. Megaw's annual report for 1954 dated the settlement to the late thirteenth century BC1.
The landward fortification wall was standing in good condition. It was built of two rows of boulders filled with rubble, and its preserved main entrance lay between two overlapping stretches of wall1. The trench exposed a house with two occupation stages separated by a destruction. The report says the occupation was brief and that Mycenaean IIIC 1 pottery occurred in all levels1.
Megaw suggested that the remains at Maa and Lara might be related to the Achaean settlement at Paphos1.
