Charalambos Paraskeva
b. 1978 · Cyprus
Cypriot prehistorian and Edgar Peltenburg's last doctoral student, who dug at Souskiou-Laona and Chlorakas-Palloures and works on Chalcolithic to Bronze Age chronology.
Biography
Charalambos Paraskeva dated the Cypriot Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age from pottery and radiocarbon results, and dug at the Souskiou-Laona cemetery and the Chlorakas-Palloures settlement while doing it. Kiely describes him as the last doctoral student of Edgar J. Peltenburg at Edinburgh, an expert in prehistoric pottery, radiocarbon dating, computer applications and theory1.
His name first appears in the printed team lists of Peltenburg's excavation of the Souskiou-Laona cemetery, near Paphos, which ran from 2001 to 2011. He is listed for 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011, and in a list headed 2008 and 20097. The final report of the project, Figurine Makers of Prehistoric Cyprus, also credits him with photographs of the site7.
In 2011 he presented the introduction to his Edinburgh research project, on social structures from the Middle and Late Chalcolithic to the Early Bronze Age, in the Cahiers du Centre d'Études Chypriotes2. The thesis, Chronology, Topography and Social Change: A Multi-Linear Perspective on the Chalcolithic to Bronze Age Transition in Cyprus, is unpublished. It is dated 2015 in one citation and 2016 in another6,7. With Peltenburg and D. Frankel he wrote the radiocarbon chapter of ARCANE II: Cyprus, pages 313 to 338 of the 2013 volume6.
From 2015 to 2017 he took part in the excavations at Chlorakas-Palloures, a Late Chalcolithic settlement near Paphos, a project of Bleda S. Düring of Leiden University. The published team also included Vasiliki Kassianidou, Paul Croft and Ellen Souter6. The excavation produced a metal axe or adze from a context dated to about 2800 to 2400 BC, and Paraskeva is a co-author of the 2018 paper that reports it. That paper gives his affiliation as the University of Cyprus6.
In 2017 he published a reassessment of Philia-Drakos sites B and C in a volume edited by D. Pilides and M. Mina4. In 2019 he wrote the chronology chapter of the Souskiou volume and a chapter on the Middle Chalcolithic to Middle Bronze Age chronology of Cyprus in New Directions in Cypriot Archaeology, edited by C. Kearns and S. W. Manning5,7.
