Kakoulis Georghiou

fl. 1943–1976 · Cyprus

Cyprus Museum staff member who dug and photographed for Porphyrios Dikaios at Khirokitia and Sotira and served as foreman for Vassos Karageorghis at Kition.

Biography

Two prefaces, written eight years apart, thank the same man for the same work: digging and photographing. Porphyrios Dikaios records in his Khirokitia report that "Mr. Kakoulis Georghiou" worked as an expert digger, "especially during the post-war campaigns, when he also did all the photographic work"1. The report says the excavation was rounded off with a supplementary campaign in 1946, which is the post-war work it describes1.

At Sotira-Teppes Dikaios wrote that Georghiou, "Senior Museum Assistant in the Cyprus Museum", assisted him throughout the excavations and "acted as foreman and photographer as well as expert digger", and that he also took all the photographs of the finds and helped with the plates2. The excavations ran from trial diggings in 1947 through Area V in 1951 and 1952 to smaller campaigns in 1954 and 19562. The surveyor Elias Markou made the plans and drawings, and George Anastasiou was foreman at the start2.

He went on to Vassos Karageorghis's excavations at Kition, where the preface to Karageorghis's Kition (1976) lists "my foremen and collaborators in the field, Mr Kakoullis Georghiou, Mr Andreas Georghiou and Mr Andreas Savva", and adds that the first two also gave much help in preparing the material for publication3. His dates of birth and death and the length of his museum service are not recorded.
