1910–1948 · United States
University Museum excavator who dug the city site at Kourion from 1934 and investigated the Late Bronze Age settlement at Bamboula in 1937; he died in 1948 and is buried at Episkopi.
Biography
John Franklin Daniel dug the city of Kourion for the University Museum, Philadelphia, from 1934, as assistant to George H. McFadden, who worked mainly at the sanctuary of Apollo. Costello describes the expedition as technically under Bert Hodge Hill, with McFadden as chief excavator5. On the city site Daniel found the theatre, the main basilica, the House of Achilles and the House of Eustolios, which he first called "The Palace"; his Trench III of 1934 produced the first victims of the Earthquake House5. He also copied inscriptions from the Baths and the Annex of Eustolios, and Terence Mitford edited them in The Inscriptions of Kourion from Daniel's Field Books, a volume dedicated to his memory4.
In spring 1937 he turned to Bamboula, where ten trial trenches led to the circuit wall and two groups of houses of Late Cypriot II and III date6. His provisional report of 1938 set out the stratified Late Cypriot III sequence and used sub-Mycenaean pottery to argue for the date of the Greek foundation of Kourion6. He had already published two Late Cypriot III tombs from Kaloriziki in 193710. Robertson calls him "the brightest American student" of Cypriote archaeology and mentions his 1939 review of Casson's Ancient Cyprus14.
Daniel died in 1948 on a reconnaissance trip in Turkey, just after a final campaign at Bamboula whose material had not been analysed; the villagers of Episkopi allowed his burial in the churchyard there1,2. McFadden, writing in 1954, places his death early in 19497. Jack L. Benson published his finds as Bamboula at Kourion in 1972 and the Kaloriziki necropolis in 1973, and the finds were divided between Curium House, the Cyprus Museum and the University Museum2.
Life and work
- 1934Began work at Kourion for the University Museum expedition, which Costello says was technically under the direction of Bert Hodge Hill, with George McFadden as chief excavator and financial backer and Daniel as his assistant. First trial trench found the main basilica; Trench III uncovered the first Earthquake House victims (House 1, Room 1).

- 1934–1935Found an inscribed altar (Trench VIII, 1934) and an inscription (12 Dec 1935) in the Baths of Eustolios, and copied a mosaic inscription in the Annex of Eustolios (21 March 1935) alongside B. H. Hill's notebook copy; Mitford edited them in The Inscriptions of Kourion from Daniel's Field Books.

- 1937Spring 1937: continued excavation of Kourion city, opened a large area in the precinct of Apollo Hylates, and investigated the Late Bronze Age settlement on the north and east slopes of Bamboula (ten trial trenches, then fortification wall and two groups of houses, LC II-III; Cypro-Minoan signs recorded). Tombs opened there earlier by the BM (Walters, 1895) are visible on the west slopes.

- 1938Published 'Excavations at Kourion: The Late Bronze Age Settlement - Provisional Report', AJA 42(2), 261-275, with architecture and stratified LC III sequence, and an argument for the date of the Greek foundation of Kourion from sub-Mycenaean pottery.
- 1939Published a withering review of Stanley Casson's Ancient Cyprus in AJA; Robertson calls him 'the brightest American student' of Cypriote archaeology.
- 1942Reviewed Sjöqvist's Problems of the Late Cypriote Bronze Age in AJA, observing that the migrations affected eastern Cyprus but probably not the whole island.
- 1947–1948Last (terminal) Bamboula campaign, finished just before he died; the material was not analysed. His death on a reconnaissance trip in Turkey in 1948; Episkopi villagers allowed him to be buried in the Episkopi churchyard.
