Lindy Crewe
b. 1965 · United Kingdom
Archaeologist who dug the Chalcolithic cemetery at Souskiou-Laona, digitised the British Museum's 1896 Enkomi finds, and directed the Bronze Age excavations at Kissonerga-Skalia.
Biography
Between 2001 and 2006 Lindy Crewe worked in the Chalcolithic cemetery at Souskiou-Laona near Paphos9, and from 2005 she was at the British Museum digitising every find from its 1896 excavations at Enkomi11.
Her Spindle Whorls: A Study of Form, Function and Decoration in Prehistoric Bronze Age Cyprus, appeared in 1998 as SIMA Pocket-book 1492. Her work on early Enkomi was published as Early Enkomi: Regionalism, Trade and Society at the Beginning of the Late Bronze Age on Cyprus (BAR International Series 1706, Archaeopress, 2007)3.
Souskiou-Laona
The Lemba Archaeological Project, directed by Edgar Peltenburg, ran six seasons in the cemetery between 2001 and 2006 and eleven seasons overall to 2011, with Sorina Spanou as co-field director from 2001 to 20039. Crewe, Spanou, Peltenburg and Lorentz published the preliminary report "Treatments of the Dead" in the Report of the Department of Antiquities for 2005 (pp. 41-67)12. In June 2005 she gave a paper on the excavations of 2001 to 2004 at a workshop of the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute13.
The full publication followed in 2019: Figurine Makers of Prehistoric Cyprus: Settlement and Cemeteries at Souskiou, which she edited with Peltenburg and Diane Bolger, the preface signed by Bolger and Crewe in Nicosia in May 20199.
The Enkomi finds in London
In 2005, with funds from the A. G. Leventis Foundation, Crewe began the British Museum's online database of its Cypriot holdings by digitising all the finds from the 1896 Enkomi excavations. Thomas Kiely later continued the database with the Kourion and other collections11. She was then a curator in the Department of Greece and Rome, and thanked its Keeper, Dyfri Williams, and J. Lesley Fitton in print1. On 22 June 2005 she gave a seminar on the electronic catalogue in the library of the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute in Nicosia13.
The online catalogue, credited to Crewe with Hector Catling and Kiely (2008), holds some 1,800 objects. The 1896 excavation had opened about 100 tombs and divided the finds two thirds to the British Museum and the remainder to the Cyprus Museum1. Her paper "Feasting with the Dead? Tomb 66 at Enkomi" appeared in 2009 in the volume Kiely edited in honour of Veronica Tatton-Brown, and builds on Tatton-Brown's publication of the museum's Enkomi notebooks1. She finished it while a British Academy Reckitt Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Manchester1. A further paper, "From Lithograph to Web", deals with the same excavations4.
Kissonerga-Skalia
The first season at Kissonerga-Skalia, an Early to Middle Cypriot settlement near Paphos, was in 2007. Test trenches showed houses of the Bronze Age, and the first preliminary report, by Crewe, P. Croft, Lisa Graham and Andrew McCarthy, appeared in the Report of the Department of Antiquities for 2008 (pp. 105-119)7,14. The Department of Antiquities annual report for 2008 describes the second season as carried out "by the University of Manchester team, under the directorship of Dr Lindy Crewe"10.
Papers from the site include a study of beer residues written with Ian Hill in Levant in 20125 and, in 2014, "A reappearing Early Bronze Age in western Cyprus"6. Kiely places the work within the "Edinburgh School" tradition of work in western Cyprus11.
At Manchester she taught and supervised graduate students, among them Daisy Knox, who completed a PhD in 2012 on prehistoric terracottas11. Kiely, writing in 2017, records that she had most recently succeeded Andrew McCarthy as Director of the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute11. In 2018 she edited, with L. Hulin and Jennifer Webb, Structures of Inequality on Bronze Age Cyprus: Studies in Honour of Alison K. South8. In 2025 she co-edited with Kiely and Anna Reeve Empire & Excavation: Critical perspectives on archaeology in British-period Cyprus, 1878-196015.
