Soli, Cholades, and Mersinaki
Kept by Alfred Westholm
66 handwritten pages in Swedish, each shown beside a transcription and an English translation, with the drawings on 2 pages cut out beside the text.
DII:2d holds Alfred Westholm's notes on two sanctuary excavations near Soli in 1930. Its typed label reads "Soli, Holades. July 1928 and 4/11 1930. Mersinaki, object list and list of workers. Binders missing. By Alfred Westholm."

The Cholades section begins with how the site was found. In early July 1928 Efremis of Galini found the body of a seated sphinx in his field at Cholades; the find was reported to the Swedes, then digging tombs at Vouni, and the sphinx was sold to the museum. Westholm writes that the excavation of the field began in June 1930, and the entries pick it up again on 7 November 1930, with sections and layers around room 3 and the gateway in wall 1. The Mersinaki pages are an object register starting at no. 601: coins, terracotta heads and statuettes, and fragments of stone statues, each with its square and level. A week's pay list for the workmen, in Greek, comes first. The text is in Swedish, the object lists mostly in English.
The page reader shows each page's scan beside our transcription and English translation. See Soli: the Cholades temples, Mersinaki and Westholm's The Temples of Soli.
