Soli: finds

264 object photographs · 1927–31

Sites: Soli, Soli-Cholades

These 264 object photographs show finds from the Swedish Cyprus Expedition's work at Soli, on the bay of Morphou, between 1927 and 1931 under Alfred Westholm. The expedition dug the Roman theatre, the temple on the acropolis and the temples at Cholades, and SCE III publishes the object registers of all three.

The prints show marble sculpture, stone statues, statuettes and heads, terracotta figurines and animals, terracotta lamps (more than 40), bronze ornaments, utensils and weapons, iron nails and tools, Hellenistic pottery, glass and loom weights. One is a marble relief of mounted Amazons armed with double axes. Labels give the expedition's find numbers (So.398), and 43 records place the object in the Cyprus Museum, Nicosia (sometimes abbreviated C.M.). That fits the agreement for the Cholades excavation of 1930–1931, under which all its finds went to the museum without division. SCE III identified among the Cholades sculptures marble statues of Aphrodite and a winged Eros attributed to Temple A, a statuette of Isis found beside Temple C, and a head of Serapis and a cult statue of Canopus from Temple E.

Westholm's study of the sculptures and temples is in the Archive as The Temples of Soli. The sites are in the series for the theatre, the Cholades temples and the city.
