234 field photographs, 14 object photographs · 1929

Site: Marion

These 248 photographs record the Swedish Cyprus Expedition's season at Marion, near Polis tis Chrysochou, where Erik Sjöqvist excavated 98 tombs between March and the end of July 1929. All but fourteen are field photographs by John Lindros, filed by the museum in folders for Tombs 1–25, 26–52, 53–76 and 77–98.

Most show single tombs during and after excavation: dromoi and steps cut in the rock, doorways and blocking stones, chamber interiors such as the roof of Tomb 93, and finds still in place, as in Tombs 60 and 75. Others show the cemeteries and the plain: the first burial ground at Sikarka-Kokkina, the grave fields, the square at Polis, camels on the Nicosia road. A sarcophagus and door stones belong to "Gunnis's tomb", one of the few tombs at Marion excavated by Rupert Gunnis, then Inspector of Antiquities. Many photographs show the workforce, including groups of women with buckets, the water carrier Hassan with his donkey, Sjöqvist in a tomb and Einar Gjerstad on a visit; one shows animal masks on the last day of the carnival. The remaining fourteen are object photographs. The tombs are published in SCE II; the finds are in the four object series, beginning with Tombs 1–30. See also the excavation.
