John Lindros
1898–1961 · Sweden
Swedish architect of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition of 1927 to 1931, who drew its plans and sections, took its photographs and filmed the work.
Biography
John Lindros drew the plans and took the photographs of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition. He was born in 1898 and died in 19612. Before Cyprus he was known for studies of traditional Swedish houses made for the Nordiska Museet3.
The expedition's first volume lists Einar Gjerstad as chief, with Lindros as architect and Erik Sjöqvist and Alfred Westholm as assistants; Lindros "acted as draughtsman and photographer" while the other two directed the excavations, which ran from the end of September 1927 to February 19311. Göransson writes that he travelled between the sites to record them2. Gjerstad's memoir recalls him setting up his camera on the roofs of houses at Lapithos, where he was taken for a magician, and coming to Vouni to draw the plan of the palace; it also names him and his wife Rosa Lindros among the 1927 party4. His film of the expedition and his photographs of Menelaos Markides with Rupert Gunnis are credited in Stanley-Price's study of Gunnis and Markides5.
In 1929 he excavated the Ayia Irini sanctuary with Sjöqvist. His draft plan of the sanctuary survives in the archive of the Medelhavsmuseet and shows poorer preservation than the published plans: corners of the cult building are missing, and circular pavements that the published plans omit appear on it. Houby-Nielsen reads the published plans as restored and embellished3. Lindros is named with Gjerstad, Sjöqvist and Westholm as co-author of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition volumes I to III, published in 1934, 1935 and 19371. The expedition archive, with about 10,000 negatives, is in the Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm2.
