Marion, finds from tombs 61–98

312 object photographs

Sites: Marion, Salamis-Tumulus 77, Mersinaki

This series holds 312 object photographs of finds from Tombs 61–98 at Marion, near Polis tis Chrysochou, where Erik Sjöqvist excavated 98 tombs for the Swedish Cyprus Expedition between March and July 1929. Tomb 61, early Hellenistic, is the last of the western necropolis at Kaparka. Tombs 62–98 were cut into a low plateau at Evrethades in the eastern necropolis, beside the Nicosia road, close to the ground where Ohnefalsch-Richter dug in 1885–1886 and Munro and Tubbs in 1889–1890.

Evrethades holds the earliest tombs found at Marion. Tombs 65, 68 and 70 date from Cypro-Geometric I and Tombs 63 and 69 from Cypro-Geometric II, but most of the burials are Cypro-Archaic. No tomb of Cypro-Geometric III was found, which the excavators took to mean a break in settlement before the Archaic period. The pottery shows the sequence: White Painted I amphorae, White Painted III and V, Bichrome IV and V amphorae and kraters, Black-on-Red and Bichrome Red jugs, with silver bracelets, bronze ornaments and an iron spearhead. Tombs 62, 69, 75 and 82 are the best represented. The tombs are published in SCE II and have their own pages, for example Tomb 65 and Tomb 69; see also the excavation.
