Marion, finds from tombs 1–30

321 object photographs

Site: Marion

Marion was one of the city-kingdoms of Cyprus, on the plain of Polis tis Chrysochou in the north-west; after 312 BC its people were moved to Paphos and the town was later refounded as Arsinoe. Between March and the end of July 1929 Erik Sjöqvist excavated 98 tombs there for the Swedish Cyprus Expedition, in an eastern and a western necropolis. This series holds 321 object photographs of finds from Tombs 1–30.

The run covers two cemeteries. Tombs 1–13 lie east of Polis, at Sikarka-Kokkina (1–3) and Potamos tou Myrmikof (4–13), and range from Cypro-Archaic I to Hellenistic; Tomb 9, a Hellenistic tomb with objects of silver and gold, has the most photographs. Tombs 14–30 are the first of the western necropolis at Kaparka, almost all of the Cypro-Classical period. The photographs show the wares of the expedition's system (Bichrome, Black-on-Red, Red Slip, Plain White), black-glazed and red-figured vases, terracottas, glass and iron tools. Each object number names the tomb (M.9.3 is Tomb 9, object 3; Dr. marks the dromos). The tombs are published one by one in SCE II, and most have a page here, for example Tomb 9 and Tomb 22. See also the excavation and the field photographs.
