P. W. Wallace

fl. 1979–1995 · United States

Professor at the State University of New York at Albany who led survey missions in Mitsero, Marion and the Akamas from 1979 and directed the 1987 excavation season at Episkopi-Bamboula.

Biography

The 1987 season at Episkopi-Bamboula was run from Albany by P. W. Wallace, who also wrote its report. The site had been dug earlier by John Franklin Daniel of Pennsylvania, who died before publishing it6. Wallace was a Professor at the State University of New York at Albany; no forename is printed in the sources2.

His Albany mission surveyed the Mitsero region in 19791. His report "Survey of the Akhera Area" is cited as describing a problem-oriented survey of that year around Meniko, concerned with Late Bronze Age mining and trade9. In 1982 the mission surveyed the Marion region2. In 1983 it worked in collaboration with the Princeton mission of William A. P. Childs at Polis, and on its own explored the Akamas peninsula; Wallace held that the prehistoric city lay elsewhere than the Iron Age one, and the group searched near Magounda for the Late Bronze Age settlement3,7. The 1984 chronicle calls the Albany work a second mission, while Hermary's chronicle describes one American mission directed by Childs and Wallace4,8. Soundings continued in the Chrysokhou region in 19865.

At Bamboula, between 1 June and 2 July 1987, the work consisted largely of clearing and understanding the earlier trenches. Trenches 23 to 29 found nothing, and the line of the fortification wall stayed unknown6. Wallace also edited Visitors, Immigrants, and Invaders in Cyprus (Albany: Institute of Cypriot Studies, 1995)10.

Albany group, working in collaboration with W. A. P. Childs's Princeton mission, continued the exploration of the Akamas peninsula (Ayios Sergios, Ayios Konon, Baths of Aphrodite, the medieval tower Pyrgos tis Rigenas, planned and its legends collected) and, from Wallace's conviction that the prehistoric city was not on the Iron Age site, searched near Magounda for the Bronze Age settlement.

  6. 1984–1985
Hermary's chronicle describes a new American mission at Marion and its region 'directed by W. Childs and P. Wallace'. The BCH reports themselves describe two parallel missions in collaboration, so 'co-direction' is Hermary's wording.
