    A first excavation at Idalion, planned under Paul W. Lapp for the Institute for Cypriot Studies (SUNY Albany), was cancelled when Lapp drowned a few days before digging was to begin.

    The Bureau of Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State approached ASOR to suggest reactivating the Idalion project.

  3. August 1971
    One-month pilot campaign at Idalion with about thirty staff and volunteers under G. E. Wright, with Stager and Walker as field directors; trial excavations in all three topographic divisions of the site. Funded by a consortium (SUNY Albany, Boston University, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Harvard Semitic Museum).

  4. 1972
    Two-month campaign with a staff of about forty; National Endowment for the Humanities matching grant for a budget of about $60,000. Excavation began at the Neolithic site of Dhali-Agridhi, and a series of area studies (geology, metallurgy, botany, zoology, neutron activation of pottery) was undertaken.

    Further seasons: 1973 intensive survey within a mile of Idalion and excavation in the Lower City; 1974 survey of the Ayios Sozomenos plateau and expanded excavation; 1975-76 survey of the copper-mining area and soundings at the medieval smelting site Teredhia; 1976 central Lower City and Dhali-Agridhi; 1977 central Lower City and West Terrace; 1978 and 1980 West Terrace.

    Project director G. Ernest Wright died; Stager and Walker became co-directors. The 1974 war and its aftermath put the East Acropolis, West Acropolis and East Terrace off limits and closed about a third of the survey area.

    At the request of the Department of Antiquities the expedition carried out salvage projects, among them a Late Cypriot II tomb (Id Tomb 1.76) found by a Dhali resident on the southern rampart of the village.

    Funding for the season came in part from aid to refugee workers from the Cyprus Department of Antiquities, alongside grants from the Oriental Institute and the University of Connecticut.

    Final season, on the West Terrace under Stager, where he exposed the monumental architecture he called the Palace.
