The Cypriot collection

History
- January 1971The Bureau of Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State approached ASOR to suggest reactivating the Idalion project, which had been planned for 1970 under Paul W. Lapp until his death shortly before digging was to start. ASOR ran a pilot project in August 1971.
- 1971–1972The American Expedition to Idalion took the field under the joint sponsorship of ASOR and the Institute for Cypriot Studies in Nicosia of SUNY Albany. Consortium members funded the 1971 campaign; the National Endowment for the Humanities matched funds for 1972. Thomas D. Newman (Rab Newman) served as treasurer and administrative director.

- 1973–1980For the Idalion seasons of 1973 to 1980 (and Dhali-Agridhi in 1974 and 1976) the authors describe ASOR as the overall sponsor, with the University of Connecticut, the Oriental Institute of Chicago, the Harvard Semitic Museum and SUNY Albany as subsidiary sponsors.

- 1978The Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI) was founded in 1978 and is described as affiliated with ASOR. Charles U. Harris's obituary says ASOR's board adopted his resolution to establish it in spring 1978; OEANE credits ASOR president Philip J. King with approaching the Department of Antiquities and Karageorghis.
