Ino (Ioanna) Nicolaou

1928–2018 · Cyprus

Epigraphist, numismatist and Department of Antiquities archaeologist who published the inscriptions and coins of Salamis, Paphos and Idalion and directed excavations at Amathus.

Biography

Ino Nicolaou (1928 to 2018) published inscriptions and coins from Salamis, Paphos and Idalion, and in the 1980s directed the Department of Antiquities' work in the Amathus necropolis1,4. She studied for a time at St Andrews with Terence Mitford and did graduate work in Athens2. In 1963 she gave the commentary on the Greek inscriptions of a statue base from Mandria, near Kouklia, acquired by the Cyprus Museum6.

Her publications include Cypriote Inscribed Stones (1971) and, with Mitford, Inscriptions from Salamis (1974)3. With O. Mørkholm she published the Ptolemaic coin hoard from Nea Paphos (Paphos I, 1976), and in 1990 the Paphos II coin volume, covering the House of Dionysos, excavated by Kyriakos Nicolaou from 1962 to 1978, and the Odeion11,14. She catalogued the coins of the American Expedition to Idalion for 1970 to 1977, where she is thanked as Assistant Curator of the Cyprus Museum10. With Kyriakos Nicolaou she published the Dhenia Kafkalla and Mali tombs in 198813.

In 1983 she assisted Michael Loulloupis in the Department's work in the Lower City and Necropolis of Amathus, and in 1984 she directed the second season in the East Necropolis, which covered five tombs and two rock-cut pits8,9. Archaeology in Cyprus, 1981-85 says she directed much of the Department's excavation of tombs in the east and west necropolis there in those years4. Metcalf notes that she kept for many years an annual record of newly found inscriptions14. A volume of papers in her honour, edited by D. Michaelides, appeared in 20132. She died in 20181.
