  1. 1970
    During an attempt to form an Institute for Cypriot Studies in Nicosia, Prof. James Heaphey of SUNY Albany found the site of Idalion assigned to the new Institute by government authority; with the support of Mary Goggin, Chairman of the Albany Classics department, Paul W. Lapp was asked to form a team to dig Idalion in 1970. Lapp died in a swimming accident west of Kyrenia a few days before digging was to begin and the plan ended (G. E. Wright's account).

    One-month exploratory campaign in August 1971 of the American Expedition to Idalion, under the joint sponsorship of ASOR and the Institute for Cypriot Studies in Nicosia of SUNY Albany; first-campaign funding came from a consortium including SUNY Albany, Boston University, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and Harvard's Semitic Museum. The US State Department's Bureau of Cultural Affairs had approached ASOR in January 1971 to suggest reactivating the project.

    Two-month summer campaign at Idalion (staff about forty); Albany is not among the named 1972 consortium members (Boston University, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Harvard Semitic Museum, University of Connecticut), though the Institute remained a sponsor.
