Life and work

    Dated to about 300 BC a four-line painted ostracon in Greek letters, found in a mud brick of the industrial terrace at Idalion; read as a mixture of Greek and Phoenician naming four city gates ('the gate of Tamassos', 'the gate of the Ark of the Armies', and others).

    Contributed Part 8, 'Inscriptions from Idalion in Greek, Cypriot Syllabic and Phoenician Scripts', to the first preliminary report of the American Expedition to Idalion (seasons of 1971 and 1972); first item is the Greek ostracon T. 54/308 listing the gates of Idalion, including the Tamassian gate.

    Listed as staff epigraphist of the 1973-1980 seasons; his preliminary palaeographic study dated the Phoenician ink ostraca found in West Terrace debris to the fourth century BC.
