Frank L. Koucky

Frank L. Koucky was the geologist and metallurgist of the American Expedition to Idalion. The director's introduction to the first report says the enthusiasm of his student Reuben Bullard "infected one of his teachers, Frank Koucky", who within a year was shifting positions to the College of Wooster, Ohio, and who was Bullard's "willing substitute" in 1972¹. The first report carries the chapter on the geology of Idalion by Koucky and Reuben Bullard (pp. 11-25) and one on the ancient Cypriot copper industry by Arthur Steinberg and Koucky (pp. 149-78)^6,7. The staff list of the 1989 volume names him "Geologist, Metallurgist"². In 1975 he and Anita Walker reported survey and excavation in the Idalion area to the Archaeological Institute of America⁸.

From 1977 he joined Ian Todd's Vasilikos Valley Project, where he and Malcolm Wagstaff began geological and geographical analyses of the valley³. In 1978 the Chronique des fouilles recorded his opinion of the deposits in a sounding on the east side of Tenta⁵. Todd thanked him for geological information in a 1982 report⁴.

In 1989 he and Steinberg published the chapter "Ancient Mining and Mineral Dressing on Cyprus", in the Idalion 1973-1980 volume⁹. It draws on slag analyses from the first report and on the Teredhia smelting site near Lythrodonda, where he sampled slag heaps in 1972. His dates of birth and death are not recorded.
