Giorgos Papantoniou

fl. 2005–2025

Archaeologist, affiliated to the University of Cyprus in 2019, who has written on Cypriot sanctuaries and sacred landscapes from the Cypriot basileis to the Hellenistic strategos.

Biography

Giorgos Papantoniou has studied Cypriot sanctuaries as landscapes, from the Cypriot basileis to the Hellenistic strategos. His monograph Religion and Social Transformations in Cyprus: from the Cypriot Basileis to the Hellenistic Strategos appeared in 20125, preceded by a 2008 paper on sacred landscapes in the proceedings of the Dublin young researchers' meeting, which he edited with A. Fitzgerald and S. Hargis3 and by a 2009 study of Soloi-Cholades4. Two articles followed in 2013, in the American Journal of Archaeology6 and the Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research7.

At Vavla-Kapsalaes he is one of four authors of a 2015 paper on the sanctuary's topography8. Kearns cites his 2018 work with N. Kyriakou for the surface finds there, figurines and statuary of a Pan-like god, and for the argument that the sanctuary may mark a royal claim to territory or copper9. With Anna Satraki of the Department of Antiquities he used GIS and least-cost paths in 2019 to relate the extra-urban sanctuaries of Salamis to territorial claims and copper routes, through the UnSaLa-CY project on the sacred landscapes of Cyprus; the volume prints his affiliation as the University of Cyprus1,2. He also edited Unlocking Sacred Landscapes with C. Morris and A. Vionis12.

Other work concerns Aphrodite and terracottas. With Christine E. Morris he wrote on the "Cypriot-born" Aphrodite in 2014 and 2019, and contributed a chapter to Empire & Excavation (2025) on Cypriot Aphrodite and British colonial discourse12. He co-edited Hellenistic and Roman Terracottas (2019) and published on the House of Orpheus terracottas at Nea Paphos with colleagues in 2017 and 201911.
