Everyone who has studied or taught in the department, past or present, is invited to a 7.30pm reception at the Ceremonial Hall on the Old Campus in Nicosia.

The Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Cyprus turns 30 in 2026, and it is celebrating with an evening reception in Nicosia on Wednesday 4 November 2026 at 7.30pm. The invitation, posted in Greek and English by the university's Archaeological Research Unit on 13 October, is addressed to everyone who has studied or taught in the department, past and present.
Guests gather on the university's Old Campus on Kallipoleos Avenue, in the Ceremonial Hall's foyer and the courtyard outside it. The department promises an evening of memories, conversation about its present and future, a chance to meet old colleagues and new ones, and food and drink.
The department's archaeologists
The department's archaeologists are tied to the Archaeological Research Unit, which this autumn runs its 66th public lecture series in Nicosia. Members of the department direct fieldwork in several parts of the island. Maria Iacovou, elected associate professor in 1998, has led the university's fieldwork project at Palaepaphos, at Kouklia, since 2006. Athanasios K. Vionis and Giorgos Papantoniou co-direct the survey of the Xeros valley in Larnaca district. Vassiliki Kassianidou co-directed, with Bernard Knapp, the excavation of the copper-smelting site at Politiko-Phorades from 1997 to 2000.
