The project
Giorgos Papantoniou and Niki Kyriakou used Vavla-Kapsalaes in a 2018 article as a case study of the relationship between extra-urban sacred space and political and cultural identities, combining archaeological and geographic data in GIS analyses1. They thank I. A. Todd for allowing them to study unpublished material from the site1. Papantoniou and Vionis report that archaeological evidence and cost-surface analysis supported connecting the sanctuary with Amathous2. Kearns describes the sanctuary as Archaic to early Hellenistic, with surface remains of figurines and statuaries of a Pan-like god, and cautions that reading sites near borderlands such as Vavla Kapsalaes as top-down political operations can overgeneralize and obscure local variation3.
