Anna Satraki

fl. 2005–2024

Department of Antiquities archaeologist who directed the 2011-12 rescue excavation of the Iron Age Platia necropolis at Idalion and wrote on Cypriot polities and royal iconography.

Biography

Anna Satraki directed the rescue excavation of the Platia necropolis at Idalion (Dali) in 2011 and 2012, which brought to light 56 Iron Age tomb groups. She had been a doctoral student of Maria Iacovou since 2005, and Iacovou writes that she was "claimed" by the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus soon after defending her thesis: from 2011 Satraki was the Archaeological Officer responsible for the Larnaca district1.

The Platia dig was prompted by the building of the Dali-Potamia road and was carried out on behalf of the Department. The tombs date from the Cypro-Geometric to the Cypro-Classical period, most of them Cypro-Archaic, about half chamber tombs and half shallow shafts. The Department had known of the cemetery since the 1950s, when a letter to its Director, Porphyrios Dikaios, reported a tomb found by Symeon Klonaris2.

Her published work deals with the kings of Cyprus. Her book Kyprioi basileis apo ton Kosmaso mechri ton Nikokreonta (Athens, 2012) treats the political organisation of the island from the Late Bronze Age to the end of the Cypro-Classical period on the archaeological evidence1,4. A chapter on Cypriot polities in the Early Iron Age appeared the same year in Iacovou's volume on Cyprus and the Aegean5, and an article on the iconography of royal power in Archaic and Classical Cyprus followed in the Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research in 20136. With Giorgos Papantoniou she wrote on the extra-urban sanctuaries of Salamis3. In 2024 she, A. Georgiadou and A. Georgiou published a study of Locus 20, an Early Iron Age group in the Platia necropolis2.
