    John Ruskin, then Slade Professor of Art, gave the Ashmolean two sculpted grave stelai that Cesnola had sent him in return for financial support of his excavations.

    The Cyprus Exploration Fund asked Ernest Gardner and the Oxford scholars J. A. R. Munro and H. A. Tubbs to excavate at Polis (Marion/Arsinoe): 154 tombs between mid-January and mid-April, then Limniti (temenos and favissa with lifesize terracotta figures).

    J. L. Myres of Oxford, asked to conclude the British Museum excavations at Amathus, was entrusted with the remaining Cyprus Exploration Fund money and dug at Ayia Paraskevi, Kalopsida, Laxia tou Riou, Tourabi, Kamelarga and Batsalos; the finds went to the Cyprus Museum and the Ashmolean (about 1200 provenanced objects), with the BM adding about 240 Amathus objects.

    J. Aitken of Oxford's Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, an archaeomagnetism specialist, joined Schaeffer's French mission at Enkomi and applied the new method to detect buried remains at several points of the site.

    The Oxford Research Laboratory sent an underwater mission led by Jeremy Green to the Kleides islands near Cape St Andreas: eight wreck sites, more than 50 anchors, a quarter of the sea floor to 50 m explored; specimens deposited in the Cyprus Museum.

    Second season of the University of Oxford Underwater Archaeological Expedition at the Kleides islands: a wreck at 20 m with about 68 stacked Corinthian-type roof tiles, and about 200 anchors recorded.

    N. P. Stanley Price of Oxford University made a 2 x 2 m trial trench at Khirokitia for the Department of Antiquities to collect radiocarbon, bone, shell and plant samples; it reached 4 m without bedrock.
