Salomon Reinach

1858–1932 · France

Editor of the Revue archéologique whose Chronique d'Orient columns, collected in 1891, report much of the minor digging in Cyprus in the 1880s.

Biography

Salomon Reinach reported on Cypriot excavations in the Chronique d'Orient he wrote for the Revue archéologique; the columns for 1883 to 1890 were collected in 1891 as Chroniques d'Orient2. Born at Saint-Germain-en-Laye on 29 August 1858, he died on 4 November 19321. His survey "Fouilles et découvertes à Chypre depuis l'occupation anglaise" (1885) reports chiefly the work of Max Ohnefalsch-Richter3,4. The Chroniques later served as a source for entries in the 1899 catalogue of the Cyprus Museum and for Ohnefalsch-Richter's digs on behalf of private residents10,11.

In 1886 he reported the lawsuit between Charles Watkins and Warren over the Tamassos excavation permit, and the Paris sale of the Pensicher collection8,9. The same year he described the winter's clandestine digging at Leuka, Loutro and Xerovouno in the Limniti valley, which he said destroyed a temenos of Apollo. He added that Ohnefalsch-Richter and Eustathios Constantinides bought a bronze diadem, and that Constantinides tried to buy back part of the loot that peasants had taken to the Nicosia bazaar6. In 1888 his column criticised the Cyprus Exploration Fund's arrangement under which the government's representative with foreign missions also represented Cambridge University; the piece was reprinted in Ohnefalsch-Richter's periodical The Owl, with a reply from Ohnefalsch-Richter5.

Marangou records a quarrel between Reinach and Luigi Palma di Cesnola, in which Reinach had written that part of the Cesnola material in the Constantinople museum came from confiscation. Cesnola answered in letters of 26 November 1882 and 25 January 1883, which Reinach printed in his 1905 obituary of Cesnola in the Revue archéologique5.
