History

  1. 1873
    Supervisory committee of the Greek Evangelical School decided in December 1873 to found an archaeological museum with library on the school premises, prompted by the school's purchase of antiquities from the auction of the Gonzenbach collection; the Museum and Library came into existence in 1874.

    Ohnefalsch-Richter published a drawing of a Late Cypriot White Slip II crater in the Smyrna museum, stating that he had checked its Cypriot provenance in the museum's records; acquisition date and circumstances unknown.

    Myres and Ohnefalsch-Richter's Cyprus Museum catalogue cites as a parallel a two-handled vase in the Evangelical School museum, 'apparently from Cyprus' (no. 922, Markopoulos Coll.).

    Library and museums destroyed in the Great Fire of Smyrna (September 1922); the White Slip II crater is presumed lost.

    Directorate of Antiquities ordered the debris of the school to be excavated; Izmir Museum, under Inspector Aziz Ogan, recovered 185 copper coins (after Kurt 2016, quoted).
