Athanasios Papadopoulos-Kerameus
1856–1912 · Greece
Greek philologist (1856-1912) whose 1879 catalogue of the Evangelical School museum in Smyrna records four Cypriot bronze and copper objects, a mirror and three spearheads.
Biography
The four Cypriot metal objects in the museum of the Evangelical School at Smyrna are known from a catalogue published in 1879 by Athanasios Papadopoulos-Kerameus, who was curator of the school's museum and library from 1873 to 18791. He is recorded as born in 1856 and dying in 19121, and Wikidata gives Drakia and Saint Petersburg as the places5.
His catalogue of the museum's metal antiquities appeared in Athenische Mitteilungen 4 (pp. 114-122)2. It lists a plain circular copper mirror and three bronze spearheads with Cyprus as their provenance. Their registration numbers suggest that they entered the collection together, and how they reached Smyrna from Cyprus is not recorded1. In 1880 he published a descriptive catalogue of the museum's ancient weights, in which no Cypriot piece is mentioned1,3.
By 1884 he was a Corresponding Member of the Instituto di Corrispondenza Archeologica for Smyrna, on a list that also names Max Ohnefalsch-Richter of Famagusta, and letters from him to Salomon Reinach of 1884 to 1887 are held at the Bibliothèque Méjanes in Aix-en-Provence1. Reinach reported that Osman Hamdi Bey, preparing a new edition of the catalogue of the Imperial Ottoman Museum at Constantinople, had charged Papadopoulos-Kerameus with the catalogue of inscriptions4.
