Amathus, finds from tombs 2–26 (tomb not recorded)

179 object photographs

Site: Amathus

These 179 object photographs come from the Swedish Cyprus Expedition's excavation of 26 tombs in the necropolis of Amathus in the spring of 1930, under Alfred Westholm. They are grouped here because the museum's record names only the archive folder, "Amathus T. 2-26", and not the tomb. In 138 cases the caption gives nothing more than that folder name; the tomb of these objects is not recorded in the photograph's record, and we have not assigned one.

The subjects are mostly small finds: scarabs and other seals filed as "Glyptic", fragments of stone sculpture, jewellery, bone objects, iron weapons and tools, and one Roman imperial coin. Many show patterned or figured surfaces close up. A reader trying to place a scarab can turn to Appendix I of SCE II, which lists the scarabs and seals from the Amathus tombs tomb by tomb, and to the object registers of the tombs in the same volume.

Photographs with a recorded tomb are in the series for tombs 1–9 and tombs 10–26. Westholm's tomb inventory is in the Archive as D II:2g.
