The Cypriot collection

Not a collecting body: its finds were divided between the Cyprus Museum, the Louvre and Saint-Germain-en-Laye under the French partage law until its repeal, and later French missions leave finds in Cyprus (Caubet). (1993)

History

  1. 1933–1958
Under the French partage policy (repealed after the Ktima finds of the 1950s per Caubet), Enkomi material went to the Louvre and Saint-Germain-en-Laye as well as the Cyprus Museum: a Mycenaean pottery group (AO 18591), weapons and tools, and the bronze banqueting-god statuette (AM 2190-2191) from Building 18 entered the Louvre. Caubet states that after the repeal the finds of French missions stay in Cyprus. Terms of the Enkomi division itself (including Powell's report of a 'half-share' for Schaeffer) are not seen

  2. 1934
Claude Schaeffer, on behalf of the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, starts digging at Enkomi hoping to find the town on which the rich cemeteries (SCE 1930, British Museum 1896) depended; the first season finds a huge building and many bronzes and shows the town lies above the cemeteries

  3. 1946–1947
Schaeffer resumes at Enkomi for the CNRS after the war, tracing the Cyclopean town wall in the south; on 19 November 1947 a hoard of bronzes comes from a large building in the northern area, and an industrial quarter is found in the north-west where bronzes and ingots had reportedly been found earlier. This work precedes the joint Franco-Cypriot mission

  4. November 1947
Schaeffer and the Cypriot authorities (Director of Antiquities Megaw per Tatton-Brown) agree to form a joint Franco-Cypriot mission; from 1948 the Cypriot team under Dikaios digs mainly late summer or autumn and the French team in October-November

  5. 1949–1950
The French team's seasons of 1949-50 find several intact tombs and a large building named Building 18; Megaw's report records the grid plan of the street system taking shape and a new stretch of town wall

  6. 1949
Schaeffer, 'himself also excavating at Enkomi', bought two cylinder seals from the Famagusta dealer G. B. Palma, one in 1949 (Merrillees); a personal purchase, not an act of the mission, noted here because of the overlap

  7. 1952–1954
Annual Archaeological Reports describe the two sides still working separately in 1952-54: in 1952 the French did not resume digging but Schaeffer published results of 1946-50; in autumn 1953 and 1954 the French mission traced the town wall on the west, and Tatton-Brown notes the east side found 1953-54

  8. 1952
Schaeffer's Enkomi-Alasia (his second volume, on seasons 1946-50) appears; the first, Missions en Chypre 1932-1935, had appeared in 1936

  9. 1958
Schaeffer presented Enkomi material to the Ashmolean Museum ('Presented by Professor C.F.A. Schaeffer, 1958', e.g. AN1958.57, a Late Cypriot II bowl) and about ten vases of his 1949 Enkomi dig are registered in the Beirut National Museum as 'Don de M. Schaeffer' (1958)

  12. 1970
21st campaign (Oct-Nov 1970) under Schaeffer as general director: O. Pelon examines two vaulted tombs in the town centre, J. Lagarce wells and cisterns, the Lagarces a sector at the end of the fifth east-west street (kilns, bronze workshops), Courtois post-Mycenaean houses

  13. 1971
Alasia I (Schaeffer ed., 18 studies of Enkomi objects, ending with Schaeffer's discussion of the plan of Enkomi) appears; later volumes: Alasia II (1981, tomb pottery), Alasia III (1984, stratified objects), Alasia IV (1985, two tombs of 1967 and 1969), and a volume on cylinder seals (1987)

  14. 1971–1973
Leadership passes from Schaeffer to Olivier Pelon: BCH names Pelon director of the French mission for the March-April 1971 campaign; Nicolaou writes 'as from 1972'; OEANE gives Pelon 1971 to 1973 and Schaeffer 1946 to 1970. Pelon's 1971 sector (4 W, west of the 'Temple Area') and the 1972 (23rd) campaign in 4 W and the rue 5 sector are reported

  15. 1972
Work west of the temple of the Horned God: an ashlar building with a limestone lion figurine on a floor, a tomb with many vases from about the mid-sixteenth century BC, and two scales of armour among many bronzes, called the first such armour in Cyprus; a fragmentary Cypro-Minoan tablet was found under the floor of an ashlar house in the southern sector (reported 1969-76)
