Foreman
Michalis Marinos Vaios
fl. 1964–1974 · Cyprus
Foreman of the French excavation at Salamis from its first visit in October 1964, a man from Enkomi who led the local workforce.
Biography
When Jean Pouilloux and Jean Jehasse went to Salamis in October 1964 to find the site and hire workmen, they met the foreman Michalis, whom Jehasse remembered as agreeable from the first moment and valuable for his competence and his knowledge of the terrain. He introduced them to his family, found them lodging near the sea, with two young women, Loulla and Beba, preparing meals, and then presented their future workmen1. Vassos Karageorghis gives the full name, Michalis Marinos Vaios, and describes him as a capable, enterprising young man from the neighbouring village of Enkomi, foreman of the mission and responsible for the works and the local labour. A photograph of 1969 shows him with Jean Pouilloux and Karageorghis2.
Marguerite Yon records that when the first campaigns of 1965 began, the workers came from Enkomi and Ayios Sergios under the foreman Michalis Marinos Vaios, and that members of the mission formed long friendships with him3,4. Nothing is recorded of his birth or death.
Life and work
- October 1964As foreman ('le contremaitre Michalis'), took Pouilloux and Jehasse on their first week at Salamis in search of the site and of workmen; their competence and knowledge of the ground were 'very precious' and he later proved so in the dig. He introduced them to his family and arranged their quarters near the sea, with two young women, Loulla and Beba, to feed them.

- 1964–1974Described by Karageorghis as 'a young man then, capable and enterprising' from the neighbouring village of Enkomi, foreman of the mission and responsible for the works and the local labour; the Greek-speaking French team and its Cypriot workers had a very friendly atmosphere 'without hierarchical distinction'.
