Vouni: the hill, views and work in progress

182 field photographs · 1928–31

Sites: Vouni, Limnitis

Vouni is the local name of a rocky hill on the north-west coast that rises straight from the sea west of Soli, to about 270 m. Earlier travellers had taken its ruins for the city of Aipeia; the Swedish Cyprus Expedition, digging there from spring 1928 to autumn 1929, found nothing earlier than the fifth century BC and rejected the identification. The 182 photographs in this series, almost all by John Lindros, show the setting of the site: the hill and its slopes, views over the sea, roads and trees, the tents and the expedition's house at Vouni, the beach below, and the bridge at Limnitis.

The series is also the main record of the people at the dig. There are the foreman Lazaros Nikolaou with Kristos Giorgiou and Alfred Westholm outside a tent, the digger Sofoklis, known as Mavrokeratas, workmen at meals, Gudrun Atterman at the house and in the car at Limnitis, and visitors such as G. Jeffery. During the work at Vouni the team swam out to the islet of Petra tou Limniti, where Westholm excavated a Neolithic settlement in 1929; see that series. Westholm's notebooks are DII:3A, DII:3B and DII:3C.
