b. 1981 · Cyprus
Numismatist and author of a 2011 book on the gold coinage of the Cypriot city-kingdoms, who also wrote the coins section of the Tsirides collection catalogue.
Biography
Evangeline Markou is the author of L'or des rois de Chypre. Numismatique et histoire à l'époque classique (Mélétemata 64, Athens, 2011), a book on the gold coinage of the Classical city-kingdoms6. Fourrier reviewed it in the Cahiers du Centre d'Études Chypriotes in 20113, and Destrooper-Georgiades reviewed it in the Revue archéologique in 20161.
Her earliest publication is not about coins. In 2003 she and Antoine Hermary published an article on earrings as men's jewellery in Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean between the seventh and fourth centuries BC, in volume 33 of the Cahiers du Centre d'Études Chypriotes5.
In 2011 she wrote the "Coins" section (pp. 141-147) of the catalogue of the collection of Angelos Tsirides and Emily Tsirides, Cypriote and other antiquities in the collection of Angelos and Emily Tsirides, published in Nicosia and listed under Vassos Karageorghis4,7. Its coin entries include a Paphos issue4.
In 2014 she, A. Charalambous and V. Kassianidou published a pXRF analysis of Cypriot gold coins of the Classical period in the American Journal of Numismatics8. The following year the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation issued her Coinage and History. The Case of Cyprus during the Archaic and Classical periods as number 6 in its Lectures on the History of Numismatics9. She also wrote an online article, "The Coinages of the Kings of Cyprus", for the Kyprios Character project1.
From 2016 to 2019 she published chapters on the coinage of individual kingdoms. One, on the kings of Paphos from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period, appeared in a volume on Nea Paphos edited by C. Balandier in 201610. A second, on the Classical coinage of Amathous, appeared in 2018 in a collection on the kingdoms of Cyprus11. A third, on the issues of the kings of Salamis in the Classical period, appeared in 2019 in Salamis of Cyprus12.
In 2018 she and Michel Amandry wrote "L'oeuvre numismatique d'Ino Nicolaou" in volume 48 of the Cahiers du Centre d'Études Chypriotes, and she was one of the authors of the obituary of Ino Nicolaou1. In 2020 she and Artemis Karnava wrote the "Nummi" sections for Amathous and Marion in Inscriptiones Graecae XV.1, published in Berlin1.
