George (Giorgos) Georgiou

fl. 2000–2023 · Cyprus

Archaeologist of the Cyprus Department of Antiquities who published Early Bronze Age, Cypro-Geometric and Cypro-Classical sites and is listed as its Director from February 2023.

Biography

Giorgos Georgiou, an archaeologist of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, co-wrote the monograph on the 47-tomb Early Bronze Age cemetery at Psematismenos-Trelloukkas. He is listed as the Department's Director from 15 February 2023, after a period as Curator of Monuments5.

His early work was on the Early Bronze Age: a tomb at Psematismenos-Trelloukkas in 2000, and revisitings of the necropolis at Nicosia-Ayia Paraskevi (2002) and the settlement at Alambra-Mouttes (2008)6,7,10. His doctoral thesis at the University of Cyprus (2007) concerned the topography of human settlement in Early and Middle Bronze Age Cyprus9. In 2008 a rescue excavation at Psematismenos-Trelloukkas, followed a landowner's building-permit application and recovered 47 tombs. Jennifer M. Webb calls him "our colleague Dr Giorgos Georgiou from the Cyprus Department of Antiquities"; her team and David Frankel's took responsibility for conservation, documentation and publication, and the monograph by Georgiou, Webb and Frankel appeared in 20111,2.

At Kition he published a Cypro-Geometric I tomb (2003) and Tomb 128, a Cypro-Classical burial with three stone sarcophagi (2009, 2010)8,11,12. With Vassos Karageorghis he published a Cypro-Archaic tomb at Xylotymbou and three Cypro-Classical tombs at Phlasou (SIMA 140, 2013)13. He also wrote on an Early Christian baptistery on the south coast of Cyprus (2013) and on the Skouriotissa mine area in the Bronze Age (2014)14,15.
