The project
In July 2008 Giorgos Georgiou and Chrysanthi Kounnou, Archaeological Officers of the Department of Antiquities, carried out a three-week trial excavation at the locality of Metaxas, Vavla-Metaxa, after levelling accidentally exposed the site1. It revealed architectural remains and a substantial supporting wall1. The annual report says that a considerable number of terracotta figurines indicate the worship of a female deity and that the site was used from the Cypro-Archaic to the Roman period1. Kearns identifies it as a probable sanctuary and describes its use as Archaic to Hellenistic2. The head of a female clay idol wearing a headdress is in the District Museum, Larnaka, as no. 111.
