Pierre Aupert

fl. 1974–2021 · France

Member of the French School at Athens who directed the French excavation at Amathus from 1975, on the acropolis sanctuary of Aphrodite and later the city walls, and edited the Guide d'Amathonte.

Biography

When the French School at Athens took up Amathus at the suggestion of Vassos Karageorghis, the effective direction of the dig was entrusted to Pierre Aupert, then a member of the School; Antoine Hermary joined him later, and administrative direction stayed with the School's director, Pierre Amandry5. The first season, in 1975, opened four sectors in the upper town and found rock-cut foundations of an Archaic-Classical building, sherds from the Geometric period onward, and stone and terracotta figurines1. In 1976 the mission looked for the four-chambered tomb that Cesnola had dug at Amathus and could not relocate it6.

From 1976 to 1980 the mission dug on the acropolis at the temple of Aphrodite, where the dedication of Androkles, last king of Amathus, to Aphrodite of Cyprus turned up re-used in a later wall2. Aupert and Hermary reported on the acropolis work together in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus for 1980, and in the early 1980s they dated the temple to the early Imperial period and found terrace walls destroyed about 300 BC3. With Marie-Christine Hellmann he edited Amathonte I (1984)13, and with Hermary he published a survey of the French excavations of 1975 to 198414. By 1995 he had examined the west gate, a north curtain wall with three towers and a rampart on the harbour side4.

He edited the Guide d'Amathonte in 1996, which appeared in English in 200015, and with Pavlos Flourentzos published a Hellenistic cadastral inscription from Amathus in 200817.

Life and work

  1. 1975
First season of the École française d'Athènes at Amathus under Aupert's direction: four sectors in the upper town, rock-cut foundations of an important Archaic-Classical building, many sherds from the Geometric period on, and stone and terracotta figurines.

  2. 1976
Second season. The mission looked for the four-chambered tomb dug by Cesnola at Amathus and could not relocate it; Aupert's 1977 BCH report notes the 'dizzying shafts' of Cesnola's account.

  3. 1976–1980
Digs on top of the acropolis at the temple of Aphrodite: the dedication of Androkles, last king of Amathus, to Aphrodite of Cyprus was found re-used in a later wall, securing the temple's identification; a small Roman Imperial temple to the north.

  4. 1979–1985
Directs the mission's acropolis work jointly with A. Hermary; main effort on the Sanctuary of Aphrodite (temple proved early Imperial by a coin of Augustus and Gaius Caesar; classical terrace walls destroyed c. 300 BC). Preliminary report: Aupert & Hermary, RDAC 1980, 217ff.
