Marie-Christine Hellmann

fl. 1976–2015 · France

French epigrapher who co-wrote the history of excavation at Amathus in Amathonte I (1984) and in 1991 traced Wilhelm Froehner's Cypriot dealings through his journal and notebooks.

Biography

Marie-Christine Hellmann traced how the Paris scholar Wilhelm Froehner, who never visited Cyprus, handled Cypriot antiquities1. At Amathus she published the 1976 clearance of sector E around the second great vase7. With Antoine Hermary she published "Inscriptions d'Amathonte III" in 19804. In Amathonte I (1984), written with Pierre Aupert, she wrote the chapter on travellers and, with Christiane Tytgat, the history of the excavations10,11.

Froehner became her main subject. She published a brochure on him in 19823. She traced his papers to the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv at Weimar, from which Olivier Masson later obtained photocopies of the letters of Tiburce Colonna-Ceccaldi8. In "W. Froehner et Chypre" (1991) she set Froehner's journal against his inventory notebooks and his bequest to the Cabinet des médailles. She dates, among other things, the Louvre's purchase of the Colonna-Ceccaldi collection on 16 February 1869 for 6,000 francs, Froehner's catalogue of the Cesnola collection for Henri Hoffmann in December 1869 and January 1870, and his Marion-Arsinoe catalogue of 18871. With Masson she published "Wilhelm Froehner numismate" in 19945.
