Life and work

  1. 1976
A plan of the Amathus excavation sector, after its 1976 clearance, is credited 'M. Schmid et G. Frangos' (BCH 101, 1977, fig. 42; chronicle by M.-C. Hellmann), cited by Fivel in connection with the 'second vase' of Amathus.

  2. 1980–1996
Karageorghis (1996) regrets that the partial restoration of the Temple of Aphrodite at Amathus, begun in the 1980s with the support of the late Evagoras Lanitis of Limassol and the enthusiasm of the School's architect M. Schmid, had not progressed in recent years; it would have saved the imposing architectural fragments and helped visitors, as at the partly restored Temple of Apollo Hylates at Kourion.

  3. 1981–1985
Symons (AR 1981-85): the French mission on the Amathus acropolis (under Pierre Aupert and Antoine Hermary) concentrated on the Sanctuary of Aphrodite; the temple was proved to be early imperial, and 'a tentative reconstruction of the superstructure has been undertaken by Martin Schmid, based on architectural fragments found during the excavations'.

  4. 1987
Co-author with T. Petit and A. Hermary of the report on the French School's work at Amathus in 1987 (BCH, 1988).

  5. 1990–1991
Designed three protective shelters (glulam arches with polycarbonate sheeting) at the Minoan site of Mallia, Crete, built 1990-91 by DIEKAT; he states he had been architect at Mallia since 1970 and drew up a master plan in 1985.

  6. 1995
At Kalavasos-Tenta the Neolithic settlement has been covered since 1995 by a new shelter in the form of a 12-faceted conical tent of PVC on glulam beams, which Schmid describes as 'a landmark' in the abstract of his 1998 article.
