Claire Balandier

fl. 1999–2021 · France

French archaeologist at Avignon who has directed the French mission on Fabrika hill at Paphos since 2008 and wrote on the nineteenth-century contest of museums for Cypriot antiquities.

Biography

Claire Balandier directs the Mission archéologique française à Paphos, which began digging on Fabrika hill at Nea Paphos in 2008. Earlier, she published a rescue excavation on the western rampart of Pafos in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus for 19991,11. Two further articles in the same series, from 2002 and 2003, deal with Cypriot defensive works from the Hellenistic to the early Byzantine period3,4.

In 2001 she contributed a chapter on the struggle of European museums for Cypriot antiquities to a volume on nineteenth-century Cyprus. It draws on Georges Perrot's chronicles in the Revue des Deux Mondes and covers Berlin's purchase of the Sargon stele, the Louvre's acquisitions, Cesnola's collection and the rivalry between the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum2.

The French mission published its first campaign on Fabrika hill with Éric Morvillez in 2009 and 20105,6. A campaign of 2010 uncovered a Roman residential building north of the hill, published in 20189. Her report of October 2016 on the third campaign of the mission's second four-year programme describes a probable stretch of the eastern rampart at the north-east of the hill and a Roman house with an impluvium, built after the earthquake of 15 BC10. She edited the acts of the first Paphos colloquium, held at Avignon from 30 October to 1 November 2012 with the Department of Antiquities8. In 2015 she co-edited the volume in honour of Jacqueline Karageorghis with Brunehilde Imhaus, Eustathios Raptou and Marguerite Yon11. In October 2017 she co-organised the second colloquium, at Paphos, with Demetrios Michaelides and Raptou10.
