René Ginouvès

1926–1994 · France

Excavator of the lower town of Soloi for the Université Laval expedition, where his sector held a glassmaker's workshop, a dyers' shop and a colonnaded street.

Biography

René Ginouvès dug the lower town (ville basse) of Soloi on the north coast of Cyprus for the Université Laval expedition, which worked there for ten seasons from 1964 under Jean des Gagniers until the events of 1974 ended it5. The 1975 colloquium paper by des Gagniers names him as Professor René Ginouvès of the Université de Paris-Nanterre4. He is listed with des Gagniers, Lilly Kahil and V. Tran Tam Tinh as an author of "Trois campagnes de fouilles à Soloi" in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus for 19674.

In April and May 1972 he continued the excavation of the lower town while Tran Tam Tinh worked on the basilica and Kahil on the house where a bronze head had been found1. He is named again among des Gagniers's assistants in 19733. The spring campaign of 1974, from the end of March to May, had three sites, and the lower town was "sous la responsabilité de R. Ginouvès"; the autumn campaign could not take place2. Des Gagniers describes his sector as a large Roman building of several rooms and courts, later reused as an industrial complex with a glassmaker's workshop and a fullonica or dyers' shop, and a paved colonnaded street 4.85 m wide that Ginouvès dated to the third century AD4. The Oxford Encyclopedia entry on Soloi adds the corner of a Cypro-Classical monument beneath the Byzantine and Roman levels5.

He published the sector as "La ville basse", pages 1 to 151 of Soloi: dix campagnes de fouilles (1964-1974) II (Sainte-Foy, 1989), the volume he shared with Tran Tam Tinh7. Wikidata records him as born at Clermont-l'Hérault on 21 January 1926 and dead in Paris on 10 November 19946.
