Markus Egetmeyer

fl. 1992–2020

Philologist of the Cypriot syllabic inscriptions, author of a repertoire of Cypro-Greek syllabic inscriptions (2010) and co-author of the Inscriptiones Cypri Syllabicae.

Biography

Markus Egetmeyer is a philologist who reads and catalogues the inscriptions written in the Cypriot syllabary. His Wörterbuch zu den Inschriften im Kyprischen Syllabar appeared in 19922, and Le dialecte grec ancien de Chypre followed in two volumes, a grammar and a repertoire of the inscriptions in the Cypro-Greek syllabary4; bibliographies date it to 2009 or 2010.

For the 2002 catalogue of the George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides collection, edited by Vassos Karageorghis, he wrote the chapter on the inscribed stones1,3. Other work listed in Steele's bibliography includes a 2004 article on the administration of the kingdom of Idalion, an article on the Eteocypriot question, and a 2013 chapter on the change from the Cypro-Minoan to the Cypro-Greek syllabaries1. In 2016 he edited, as an appendix to Palaepaphos-Skales by Karageorghis and Raptou, a Cypro-Minoan inscription on a bronze bowl of the Cypro-Geometric period6.

With Artemis Karnava and Massimo Perna he wrote a 2011 paper on a corpus of Cypriot syllabic inscriptions, and in 2017, with them and Hedvig Landenius Enegren, reported the completion of the first fascicle of the Inscriptiones Cypri Syllabicae, covering Amathus, Curium and Marion1,8.
