Miltiades B. Hatzopoulos
fl. 2005–2016 · Greece
Historian of the Greek world who wrote on Cypriot kingship and framed, with Maria Iacovou, the 2012 Nicosia symposium on the island's city-kingdoms.
Biography
Miltiades B. Hatzopoulos is a historian of the ancient Greek world whose work on Cyprus deals with kingship and the transition to Ptolemaic rule. His articles include "Chypre, de la multiplicité des royaumes à l'unité de la province lagide" (2009)5 and a 2011 paper on the Idalion Bronze6.
In May 2012 the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the University of Cyprus Archaeology Unit held the symposium "Basileis et poleis" in Nicosia, in honour of Clio and Solon Triantaphyllides, donors of the George and Nephele Giabra Pierides Collection. Hatzopoulos and Maria Iacovou defined its scientific and thematic contours and edited its proceedings, published in 20142.
His own contribution, "Cypriote Kingships in Context", argues that the term "city-kingdoms" fits the polis form and traditional monarchic government of the Cypriot states, and that they descend from Bronze Age Cypriot state forms and Aegean sub-Mycenaean forms of government1. In his chapter on Salamis and Paphos in the Salamis volume he treats them as the two main Hellenic city-kingdoms, accepts Iacovou's copper-access model for their origin, and notes that literary sources favour Salamis while inscriptions favour Paphos3. His affiliation there is the Academy of Athens3.
