John Howard Young
fl. 1934–1963 · United States
Member of the University Museum's Kourion expedition who, with Suzanne Halstead Young, catalogued the Kourion terracotta figurines, published in 1955.
Biography
John Howard Young and Suzanne Halstead Young catalogued the terracotta figurines from the University Museum's excavations at Kourion, most of them from the sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, in a book published in Philadelphia in 19553. They began the study in 1939; the war interrupted it for nearly a decade, and the book includes finds to the end of the 1948 season3. The preface speaks of "our Director, Mr. Bert Hodge Hill", and the volume is dedicated to George H. McFadden3.
In summer 1946, with McFadden's permission, the Youngs made a last investigation of the Votive Deposit area at the sanctuary, digging under the deposit's rubble wall and in a pit in the adjoining building3. Samples of local and other clays from the excavations went to the United States with the permission of the Director of Antiquities, A. H. S. Megaw, for micropetrographic analysis at Johns Hopkins3. The Chronique des fouilles of 1963 reports that soundings at the Kourion stadium were made from 1939 by the Pennsylvania mission under "Professeur J. H. Young"; they were not published, and Young dated the stadium to the Roman period, probably the 2nd century AD1. Megaw reviewed the figurine book in 1956 as a major event for the study of Archaic and later Cypriot terracottas2.
