Christofis Polykarpou
fl. 1930–1987 · Cyprus
Episkopi man who began as George McFadden's secretary on the Penn Kourion expedition and drew the plans of Bamboula and Kourion and was a retired archaeological architect by 1987.
Biography
Christofis Polykarpou of Episkopi began his career as the personal secretary of George McFadden, who financed the University Museum's excavations at Kourion from 1934 and built the Episkopi house, later given to the Department of Antiquities1. Thomas Davis, who calls him "now a retired archaeological architect", reports that in a video interview of late 1987 he recalled McFadden becoming part of Episkopi life, and how he saved the Easter celebration by paying the labourers before work started1. The date at which he took the post is not recorded.
By 1955 he was assistant to J. S. Last on the dig. In the volume on the Kourion terracotta figurines, John Howard Young and Suzanne Halstead Young thank him for his help in cataloguing and drawing, and credit Plans 1 and 2 to Last and him2. J. L. Benson's Bamboula volume of 1972 lists "C. Polycarpou" among the draughtsmen and says he prepared all the drawings of house, tomb and site plans under Last's supervision. It adds that the finds were divided between Curium House, the Cyprus Museum and the University Museum3. In Mitford's Inscriptions of Kourion, G. Roger Edwards credits "Christophis Polycarpou of Episkopi" with additions to Last's plans4. Nothing is known of his dates of birth or death.
