Reuben Goldberg

d. 1960

Photographer of the University Museum in Philadelphia who improved the photographs for the Kourion terracotta figurines book and worked on the Bamboula volume until his death in 1960.

Biography

Reuben Goldberg was the photographer of the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, and two of its Kourion publications owe their illustrations in part to him. In their book on the terracotta figurines from Kourion, published in 1955, John Howard Young and Suzanne Halstead Young thank "Mr. Reuben Goldberg of the Museum" for having "much improved some of our worst photographs"2.

He also took on the photography for J. L. Benson's volume on the Bamboula necropolis at Kourion. Benson's preface describes him as "the photographer of the University Museum", credits him with the great amount of complex photographic work the volume required, and says he was completing its last stages almost at the hour of his untimely death in 19601. Nothing further is recorded of his birth, training or earlier career. The book appeared in 1972, and its plates mix his photographs with those of Daniel, G. Roger Edwards, Benson and photographers of the Cyprus Museum, a result of the division of the finds among Curium House, the Cyprus Museum and the University Museum1.
